POETS' CORNER

Daljit Nagra and others - Friday all day

Our poet-in-residence this year is Daljit Nagra. In 2004, Nagra won the Forward Poetry Prize for best single poem for Look We Have Coming to Dover! Nagra's debut collection, which takes the same title, won the 2007 Forward Poetry Prize for best first collection. Nagra has been featured on television and radio, including Newsnight Review. Nagra's witty and poignant poems capture the experience of British-born Indians.

As well as giving readings, Daljit will hold master-classes and a surgery for budding poets who would like just a little extra help.

Daljit will be joined during the day by two young poets from the Tall Lighthouse stable – Gareth Jones and Helen Mort. Gareth has been published in numerous magazines and broadcast on radio, and has received prizes in the 2005 Academi Cardiff Poetry International and 2006 National Poetry Competitions. Helen was a winner of the Foyle Young Poets’ Award on five occasions from 1997 to 2004, and her work has been published in a variety of publications including The Rialto, The Times Educational Supplement and by the Poetry Society.

In the afternoon they will be joined by Keith Please, who will read from his book of poems Firestrikes, which draws together over forty years’ work.
