THE GREAT ESCAPE

The Royal Engineers - Tuesday all day

The Corps of the Royal Engineers is a unique force, active all over the world in conflict and in peacetime. Known as ‘Sappers’ (named after the trenches or 'saps' they once built), members are multi skilled – soldiers and combat engineers. From fighting alongside the Armed Forces to purifying water, making maps and building accommodation, the Royal Engineers play a vital role in the effectiveness of the British Army as well as the Navy and RAF.

In peacetime, the skills and resources of the Corps are used to help civilian populations cope with and recover from conflict and natural disaster.

This year, Beyond Words is delighted to welcome a team of Sappers, who will test the ingenuity of Lower Remove and Remove students in a series of problem-solving and construction tests which will involve, amongst other things, aerial ropeways, pyramid towers, retrieval of objects from contaminated toxic waste areas, and bridge building. In short, everything you need to make a Great Escape.
